Military Life: It’s NOT Bonbons & Soap Operas!

I have to laugh whenever someone asks me what I do all day.  As The Direction Diva my life is full and hectic. I spend time blogging, speaking and writing and that’s in between calls, interviews and marketing tasks. OH and did I mention I’m a wife, mom and grandma!? So I’m busy all day, everyday and rarely have time to relax.

Trust me it’s not bonbons and soap operas if that’s what you were thinking. In fact I don’t know a military spouse that isn’t going in a million different directions trying to get it all done. Sure we all have different job descriptions and me; I work from home because that decision made the most sense for our family.

We military spouses are a diverse bunch. Some of us work full-time careers, others own our own businesses and many of us choose to stay at home to raise children with the hope of keeping things running smoothly. But that is only part of the story. The reality of military life is that we are required to wear a lot of different hats because of the lifestyle we lead.  We are often responsible for the finances, the house, the kids, and that’s all before 9 am formation.

The home front is our territory, our mission, and our responsibility.  And frankly it can get a bit overwhelming.  It’s the things like frequent moves which make establishing a career more difficult and the fact that most parenting “experts” don’t get that raising children in the military environment has its own set of challenges that put us over the edge.  If that wasn’t enough I don’t think people can appreciate that budgeting on a military salary is almost as difficult as balancing the federal budget and that dealing with frequent deployments really does take its toll after a while.

So on day’s like today when my life feels like it’s a bit overwhelming, trust me I wish it were all simple and easy. But until then it’s just my life as a military spouse, and frankly I couldn’t tell you what I do all day because depending on when you ask me I will probably have a different answer. But what I can tell you is what it’s not. It’s NOT bonbons & soap operas that’s for sure!

After writing this I wondered….what is your response when someone asks YOU what you do all day?

Right now I am in the process of finding a job, but it’s a lot harder that I thought it would be. So I stay at home and make sure the home stays clean, dinner is ready when the husband comes home, and the dogs are taken care of. I feel bad about being home all day…I feel like I should have a job considering we don’t have any kids. But when people ask me I tell them I search for jobs and make sure the house is kept up. There’s not a whole lot more I could do at this point!

I have a full-time job and I travel often for my career, but I am a wife first and foremost. I try to cook at home as much as I can. I blog. I volunteer as co-Survivor Chair for Relay for Life among other charity work I do. I am a biker babe (my husband and I LOVE riding our Harley Davidson). I take care of two lizards (LOL, yep lizards). I am a bonus mom from a distance (my husband has beautiful daughters who live in another state – steps are for staircases so we came up with ‘bonus’). I am a Navy Wife, everyday and sometimes you just cannot put the meaning of that into words. You hit the nail on the head – we are so diverse as military spouses! Sometimes I’d like others to try it for a day. 😉 Until then, when I am asked that question, I preface it with, “I live an amazing life.” And it’s true. 🙂
