Lessons and the Unspoken Toll of Military Life

Sometimes as we traverse military life it can feel as though we live separately from the outside world. We have our own lingo, we take pride in things others take for granted and our day to day challenges are very different from our civilian counterparts. Because of this we need to build stronger coping skills and hone our self care strategies so that we are prepared – especially for the stuff we never see coming. I didn’t realize how much I’d been slacking on both my self-care and coping strategies until recently when we were blindsided by a family crisis that none of us saw coming. 5 weeks ago I went to Florida to…

Why People Pleasing Is Ruining Your Life

Have you ever noticed that sometimes in military life it seems as though every time you turn around someone or something  just keeps getting in the way of your dreams?  It may feel like for every idea you have or action you take there is someone out there telling you it can’t be done or how it won’t work.  They may even share a suggestion as to how to do it “the right way”. After church today, I reflected on something the pastor said that really hit home and got my wheels spinning.  He was talking about the disconnect that we all have when others tell us how we “should” act and what we “should”…

Military Life: Are We Alienating The Male Military Spouse?

I’m inclusive, I reach out to the newcomer, I’m supportive of all military spouses and I love my military life. I’m all of these things; UNTIL I’m not. And today it’s been brought to my attention that without realizing it we have once again alienated the male military spouse. Don’t see it? Neither did I…that is until today. This morning as I was sharing information on a free military spouse event one of my all time favorite military spouse advocates sent me a message with a simple statement. Jeremy Hilton shared: “I’m starting to get the message that men aren’t wanted at these events”. As I read the message I instantly wanted to insure him that…

Military Life: Using Logic to Handle Change More Effectively

A while back I had the privilege of attending a recognition dinner where a wonderful speaker talked about how to deal with changes that come up in our lives. Immediately I knew that I could apply her brilliance to my military life in so many ways. For me when things are changing my emotions get the best of me and I struggle to get things done. I wander from “project” to “project” never quite finishing anything to completion.  I can’t think, can’t be productive and certainly can’t focus on much of anything. And then I get more stressed because of my lack of activity. As I listened there were tons of great insights, but two things stood…

Are You Ready To Be Happy In Military Life?

I’ll be the first to admit that when I became a military spouse I had no idea how to handle the logistics, change and stress that came with the military life. I was the epitome of fake it ’til you make it and often made things so much harder on myself than they needed to be.  But over the years I’ve gone from overwhelmed and stressed out to resilient in ways I never knew possible. I have felt powerless and learned to overcome situations and challenges and I’ve become stronger.   At my husbands promotion ceremony the other day I was asked what I do besides take care of my military family.…

The Authentic Milspouse: A Collection From your Favorite Military Life Blogs!

One of my goals as I navigate military life is to be an authentic military spouse. And every year I choose a word to motivate and push me toward my ideal life. I have been inspired by gratitude, balance, strength and last year I even wrote about Focus and the power that word had for me. Fellow military spouse Jennifer Pilcher of Military One Click also chooses a word and talks about it in a recent piece titled Entrepreneur Resolutions. But what I love most about what she shared isn’t the word, but more the spirit in which she talks about how she came up with it. Raw, real and authentic. And that’s what we have today,…
